The Boston Globe to publish winter issue of “Diversity Boston”

Boston : The Boston Globe will publish the winter issue of its semi-annual "Diversity Boston" magazine December 5, in The Sunday Boston Globe and on Boston.com. The magazine, put together by the Globe staff, reports on the issues of diversity that affect the community, workplace, and culture in the city.

The issue's cover story explores Boston's struggles to improve its reputation among minorities through the lens of people who have stayed, left, and returned to the city. The images of the 1970s busing crisis will forever be etched in history, leading many to think of the Hub as a hostile place for minorities. But city officials and business leaders have been working to demonstrate that while Boston hasn't solved every issue of racial inequality, it has made great strides since the 1970s.

"Diversity can be a challenging topic of conversation, but it's an important and necessary one. We hope that this magazine encourages more of that dialogue throughout our city and our region," said Boston Globe Business Editor Shirley Leung, who oversaw the magazine.

The 24-page "Diversity Boston" also includes features about the popularity of social-media tool Twitter among African-Americans; whether diversity training programs work; and the increasing number of minorities in medical schools. The magazine also convened a special roundtable with medical leaders to discuss health disparities among women and minorities.

This is the second issue of a redesigned Diversity Boston, which was re-launched earlier this year with more features in print and online.

"As 'Diversity Boston' readers will see, a key part of a successful business and a successful community is diversity," said Diversity Boston Editor Kortney Stringer. "Not only does this magazine encourage readers to learn more about diversity, but it also encourages them to get involved."

The "Diversity Boston" Web site (boston.com/diversity) features all of the magazine's coverage, along with photos and video. The next issue of the magazine will be in the summer 2011.
